Bird species include: Rwenzori turaco, crowned hornbill, black kite and crowned crane.
Gorilla Tracking
The most exhilarating and remarkable experience which might take one through a thick jungle is gorilla tracking. One gorilla group (Nyakagezi) is currently habituated and available for you to watch. Nyakagezi consists of 11 members; 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 4 juveniles and 2 infants.
Gorilla tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is awe-inspiring but may be exigent, therefore ensure physical fitness. Booking should be done at least 3 months in advance.
Bird Watching On request, birding along the edge of the park is available. A leisurely walk along the buffalo wall towards Democratic Republic of Congo takes you through a wetland area where ibis, speckled mouse bird and fire finch are found. Around the campground, stone chart, grey capped warbler, waxbills and yellow-vented bulbul are constantly spotted. Binoculars should never be left behind.
Volcano Climbing
Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhavura are the three extinct volcanoes offered by Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for physically fit hikers. No special mountaineering gear is required.
Mt. Sabinyo (3669 m)
'Old man's teeth'
This volcano offers three exigent peaks to climb. Peak 1 is accessed by taking a climb up to the mountain to a ridge on the eastern side of the mountain. A climb to peak 2 involves walking a ridge with a breath-taking drop into gorges of Rwanda and Uganda. The hike up to the final peak 3 is steep. Getting your hands dirty en-route should be one of your expectations. You will be at a point in Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda at the same once on top of this peak. About 8 hours round trip to cover the 14km stretch is all it takes.
Mt. Gahinga (3474m)
'Small pile of stones'
Look out for small piles of stones in the garden fields on your way to park. Such a pile is called a 'Gahinga', by the local people. Although sitting next to Mount Muhavura does make it look small, Mount Gahinga is quite bigger than the average 'Gahinga'. A hike which goes through pure Bamboo forest, takes you about 6 hours round trip.
Mt. Muhavura (4127m)
'The Guide'
This typical cone-shaped volcano acts as a guide. It is seen from all over Kisoro and provides some of the best views in the country. To the top, one passes a rocky surface covered by grass and small shrubs. Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, peaks of Rwenzori Mountains and the Virunga Volcanoes are rewards for hikers to view once at the top.
This hike takes in the region of 8 hours round trip covering 12kms.
Garama Cave
The cave is where the Batwa (pygmies) who were warriors once inhabited and fought their neighbours, the Bantu. The cave's entrance is 3kms from the park headquarters and takes about 2 hours. The cave is 342m in length and 14m deep, and is now for the most part inhabited by bats. You are shown how the Batwa lived and fought out of the cave by ranger guides.
