21 day Birding Tour

DAY ONE

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport. There are several unique places in Entebbe area like Botanical Gardens where you can see the Entebbe weaver. Lutembe bay one of the biggest roosting sites for Gulls and Turns in the world, Mabamba Bay where you can see such species as the Shoebill and other Lake Victoria basin restricted birds.
However you can proceed to Kampala. There are birding places in the city that boost of over 300 species that are various and the biggest known breeding colonies of marabou stocks. Other spectacle species such as Grey and Brown Parrots, Palm nut Vulture, Bat Hawk, Owls and Nightjars.

DAY TWO

Visit near by sites like Mabira forest on Kampala Jinja road with a list of over 300 species. Two globally threatened species are known from the reserve Nahans Francolin and papyrus Gonolek. Mabira is at the confluence of various habitats and you can see wetland species, such as papyrus endemics, guinea Congo Forest species many of which are not well represented in other protected areas such as, Black-shouldered Nightjar, capuchin, Grey Long bill and blue headed crested Fly catcher. There are other interesting sites around Kampala city such as Mpanga Forest on Kampala Masaka road (40km), Bahai Temple (2km) or areas along Lake Victoria (Lutembe Bay (18km), Mabamba bay (50km).

DAY THREE

Drive along Masaka-Mbarara road, Bird along Mpanga forest and you can have a stop over at the kakku swamp, look out for the elusive Shoebill, ask the community to show you “Bulwe” and they will be more than pleased. Proceed to Lake Mburo National park Perhaps the best place in Uganda where to see The African Fin foot, Red faced barbet, Pink-backed pelican, Darter, Long-tailed cormorant, Fish eagle, Squacco heron, Black crake, Hamerkop, papyrus gonoiek, Malachite kingfisher, Yellow-billed egret, Whitewinged black tern and most papyrus endemics.

DAY FOUR

Drive to Mgahinga National Park the smallest and probably most scenic national park situated in the extreme southwestern corner of the country. Few birders will be able to resist the attraction of some of Uganda’s most spectacular birds such as the handsome francolin, Lagdens Bushshrike, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird and Rwenzori turaco

DAY FIVE – SIX

Drive early to BICA, which offers some of the finest montane forest birding in Africa and is a key destination for any birder visiting Uganda. Look out for the globally threatened species such as African Green Broad bill and Shelly’s crimson wing, many known from no other site in East Africa. Depending on the time available, you can track the famous mountain gorillas. Spend two nights birding from Ruhizha to Buhoma.

DAY SEVEN – EIGHT

From BICA connect through Ishasha to queen Elizabeth National Park. Arrange for a boat trip on Kazinga Channel, a natural magnet for water bird and vicinity of Mweya act as a migrant trap for birds moving a long the albertine rift, flamingos, terns, gulls, Caspian Plovers, Recurvirostra Avocets,

 

DAY NINE

Early morning bird in the vicinity of Paraa, afternoon bird in crater area and around Mweya peninsular. Continue along the road following the southern rim of Kyambura Gorge that offers a good view over the forest along the Kyambura River. This is an excellent place to see the Shoebill on the fresh water swamps, the always-photogenic African Fish Eagle, the Martial Eagle, African Skimmer papyrus interior species such as Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek and Blue breasted king fishers are also remarkably common.

DAY TEN

Leave QENP and head for Rwenzori mountains National park. Most of the park is accessible only to hikers although the magnificent scenery and 19 Albertine endemics, amongst them are Rwenzori Turacco, Bamboo Warbler, Golden-winged Sunbird, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, Stuhlmann’s Double-collared Sunbird, White-collared Olive-back Nesocharis ansorgei and Shelly’s crimson wing, would be ample reward for the intrepid back packing birders.

DAY ELEVEN
Drive to Kibale National Park, an extensive national park that protects a large block of rain forests that offers some excellent forest birding. Bird along the main road from the Kanyanchu Visitor center to the bridge and beyond. Before you enter the forest check the scrubby fringes of the over grown cultivation for scary francolin, marsh Tchagra and the Grey headed Olive back. A net work of forest trails radiate out from the visitor center allowing you to search for a number of species that shun the vicinity of the main road. Some of the rare and elusive ground dwellers that may be surprised a long these trails are Nahans Francolin, Green Breasted and African Pittas, Black and white casqued Hornbill, Waxbills, Weavers, Starling and Barlets among others.

DAY TWELVE – THIRTEEN

Drive early morning to bird in Budongo Forest Reserve that lies at the age of the Albertine Rift Valley. It is the best site in Uganda for number of sought after birds such as Cassin’s spinetail, Ituri batis and chest nut- capped flycatcher. To reach the “Royal Mile” area turn right north at the Nyambea forest tree college, frequent species include the Banded Snake Eagle, Crowned and African Pied Hornbills.
Through the Kaniyo Pabid Areas proceed to Murchison Falls National. Key species in Murchison Falls National Park include among others the Shoebill, Secretary Bird Bat Hawk, Scared Ibis, African Spoonbill, Osprey, Red-necked Falcon, Denham’s Bustard, Senegal thick-knee, Black Kite, Curlew, Whimbrel, Spotted Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, Teal, Garganey, Northern Pochard, Tufted Duck and standard winged nightjars.

DAY FOURTEEN – FIFITEEN

Leave early morning for Lake Kyoga. The swamps around the water bodies of Lakes Opeta and Bisina host Uganda’s only endemic bird species; the Fox’s Weaver as well as other threatened species like the Shoebill.

DAY SIXTEEN – SEVENTEEN

Leave Soroti for Kidepo Valley National Park. For the visiting birder the park is second only to QENP as it boosts a bird list of over 475 species. Among the host of dry eastern specials not found in any other Uganda National Parks are some of the rarest and most sought after birds such as Black-breasted Barber and Karamoja Apalis.
Early morning allow at least a full day to do this bird-rich area justice. The grasslands around the air strip are a good place to search for the striking Black headed Plover and singing Bush Lark, Croaking Cisticola, Lesser Kestrel, Pallid Harrier, Golden Pipit, Taita Fiscal, Rufous Chatterer, Grey Wren Warbler, Rufous Napped Flappet Larks are common and easily seen.

DAY EIGHTEEN

Drive from Kidepo Valley National Park to Moroto Town. Mount Moroto lies in the extreme east of Uganda and is the most accessible place to see some of the dry northeastern “specials”. The dense thorn savanna supports species such as the White-bellied Go away bird, Jacksons Hornbill among others.

DAY NINETEEN

Drive to Mt. Elgon National Park arrive at the forest Exploration Center, which lies in the Chebonet Valley with a net work of trails providing access to the surrounding mountain forest. The secondary forest and thick scrub along the Chebonet supports African Goshhawk, Chubb’s Cisticola, White chinned Prinia, Lammergeiers, Jacksons Francolin, Guinea fowls, Sunbirds, Black and white Casqued hornbills, Redheaded parrots, Turacos, Montane Nightjar, Oriole Finch, Abyssinian Crimson-wing, Moustached Green Tinkerbird, Black-collared Apalis, great Podos, Elgon Teak, Cedars and African Blue Flycatcher.

DAY TWENTY

Drive from Mount Elgon National Park and to Jinja. They are some birding opportunities along the road to the source of the R Nile. Leave Jinja for Kampala and bird along Mabira Forest have a stop over in Mukono. Bird towards Mukono University. Reach Kampala City and enjoy your evening have dinner and accommodation at your favorite hotel.

DAY TWENTY ONE

Leave Kampala early for Entebbe airport and depending on the time of departure you can bird slowly along the road towards Entebbe and the surroundings of the Airport.
